Do not use salt or vinegar to kill weeds.
Salt is a natural earth mineral... so it must be better than the chemicals produced by the evil money grabbing chemical companies, right? Wrong. Arsenic, uranium, radium, lead, mercury are all natural earth minerals also.
Natural doesn't mean safe. For centuries salt has been used to render soil unsuitable for growing crops for many years ( invading armies would burn crops then plough salt into the soil) . The half life of broad based weed killers, is considered to be two to three weeks, maximum, not years. Salt is not washed from soil for many years. It wouldn’t make it out of a lab to pass the stringent conditions in preserving the environment for use in soil on its own. Isn’t that good to know?
Salt is far more toxic than any commercial weedkiller ... and vinegar is acid. In the five percent acetic acid quantity of household vinegar it will not work. I repeat, it will not work. May wilt it for a while, but that’s it. It is also damaging to soil life. And it will bugger about with your ph. Commercial weedkillers are made to degrade in soil by bacteria, salt will never degrade and shrivels up and kills all microbial life. It would never pass any safety standards if anyone attempted to sell it commercially as a weedkiller. If you must use vinegar because you mistakenly believe it won’t harm your soil life, you are incorrect. The only vinegar that will work must be above 20 percent acetic acid and those are found in horticultural weedkillers and kill grass too.
If you are so against the evil chemical companies and the damage you think pesticides and herbicides do, make sure you research your facts. I urge people to not read headlines, but to do some proper authentic research from scientific journals, and not just one shoddy study. If you really want to avoid all herbicides and pesticides, then pulling them out by hand is your only choice. There is no short cut.
You must improve soil fertility, reduce compaction, rest and rotate, and have enough grass plants so that weed seeds can’t settle in order to reduce them ....... and you must return organic matter back to the soil, as well as add the chemicals, yes chemicals, identified by your soil test. Weeds won’t survive in fertile soil. Salt and vinegar will not make your soil fertile.
